What's Picker?

I often found myself staring at a folder full of PDF books, unable to decide what to read next. So I built Picker — a small macOS utility with one job: choose for you. Import files or folders, select a few items, and Picker picks one at random.

How it works

  • Import files or folders from your Mac
  • Select two or more items
  • Click Pick to choose a random one
  • Each pick is saved in the History
  • Open files or reveal them in Finder

What's new in 1.0.2

  • Improved import data management to reduce bottlenecks and handle large libraries more smoothly.
  • More consistent list behavior with better deduplication and clearer separation between imported data and displayed results.
  • Faster previews using Quick Look (when available), with caching to speed up scrolling.
  • More reliable History handling (more predictable matching and fewer edge-case inconsistencies).

    • Optimized the import pipeline to avoid redundant work and reduce UI stalls on large folders.
    • More robust path normalization and deduplication to avoid repeated entries.
    • Previews are generated through Quick Look where possible, with caching to reduce repeated processing.
    • History entries behave more consistently during import/export and matching.

    Known limitation: if files are renamed or moved, matching can change when identity is path-based.

First run on macOS

Picker is distributed directly, not through the App Store. On first launch macOS may block it — this is normal.

  1. Download Picker.zip
  2. Open the ZIP file
  3. Drag Picker into the Applications folder
  4. Go to Applications
  5. Right click on Picker → Open
  6. Confirm Open

This is required only the first time. If you accidentally clicked "Move to Trash", download Picker again and you can also allow Picker from System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
